The History of
Glastonbury Festival
From a small event in 1970 to the beloved festival we know today, Glastonbury's rich history has been shaped by the incredible people dedicated to its existence. Over its 54 years, one thing has remained constant: there is no place on Earth like Glastonbury.
The1970s
A visit to a nearby festival sparks the imagination of Michael Eavis, inspiring him to create his own event in a field behind his farmhouse — the humble beginnings of a legacy spanning five decades.
The1980s
As the 80s roll around, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament begins its involvement in the festival, starting with a name change and then the expansion of its role within the event.
The1990s
A new decade brings another name change, and the festival continues to attract the biggest names in entertainment — plus hundreds of thousands of punters.
The2000s
The rebirth of an icon, as the Pyramid Stage rises like a phoenix from the ashes of its destruction six years prior. While the decade, the stage, and the fence might be new, the festival remains true to its original ethos.
The2010s
The festival goes from strength to strength, its attendance now eclipsing the population of both Oxford and Bath, and the calibre of talent gracing its stages increases year after year.
The2020s
A global pandemic spoils the festival's chances of an official 50th anniversary celebration, but its triumphant return in 2022 proves the festival is showing no signs of slowing down.
